Broadband to get even faster

NTL is going to increase its standard braodband speed for all customers to 10Mbps.

10/08/2005 | 16:01

NTL has announced that it is increasing its standard broadband offering to 10Mbps.

The cable firm said in a statement that subscribers will receive a standard minimum 10Mbps connection speed, with no additional cost, once the new service is up and running.

NTL will upgrade its subscribers with 3Mbps service first, expected by the year-end, and claims it is confident it can further improve the speeds to 30 Mbps or even 50 Mbps using its cable network or through ADSL2+ DSL broadband connections.

The cable firm said higher internet speeds meant that a range of new services could be offered, such as high-definition TV, domestic video conferencing, global gaming, and video email.

NTL chief executive Simon Duffy said the company planned to move all broadband subscribers to the 10 Mbps service by 2006. The firm currently has 1.4 million UK subscribers and new users can subscribe to the 10Mbps connection immediately.

"Our broadband services will become amongst the most innovative in the world and certainly well ahead of anything else in the UK," Mr Duffy said.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) broadband now accounts for 50.7 per cent of all UK internet connections, with most users on basic speeds of 1Mbps or 2Mbps.
