British Airways reaches a standstill

12/08/2005 | 16:08

British Airways cancelled 535 flights today after around a thousand of its employees went on strike in a display of solidarity with Gate Gourmet workers.

There is major disruption on the airline's flights following the walkouts and 70,000 passengers have been stranded.

Other airline carriers such as American Airlines, Deutsche Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic and Air France-KLM Group are picking up British Airways' passengers but many travellers remain unable to get a flight.

Rod Eddington, BA's chief executive, called upon Gate Gourmet's management and trade union officials to act quickly and attend talks in order to resolve the row.

"It is a huge disappointment to us that we have become embroiled in someone else's dispute,' he commented.

BA has suspended all its flights until at least 8pm this evening and does not know how long it will be until a normal service is restored.

This is the latest in a line of summer walkouts from BA's staff.
