Google's 'Desktop 2' rivals Microsoft

22/08/2005 | 17:25

The new software package from Google steps on the toes of current providers such as Microsoft and AOL.

Google's 'Desktop 2' will enable users to manage their Gmail and personalise their desktops with news and music.

This latest service is free of charge and remembers what users have looked at most so it can tailor the site to their needs much like sites like Yahoo do at the moment.

Currently Google is the most used internet search engine and it looks to expand this lead by searching various programmes on your system such as Outlook and Word in the same way it searches the internet.

The new Google searchbar will give users easy access to email, news, web clips, a handy note pad, photos, frequently used pages, what's hot, stocks, the weather and a search engine.

All this rivarly is good news for consumers who stand to benefit from the extra choice that the race for the latest impressive features in desktop organisation and entertainment could provide.
