Car number plates have changed to the latest '55' upgrades. Number plates change twice annually, in March and September, and these months traditionally witness more car sales.
However, the Retail Motor Industry Federation does not expect the new number plates to have a dramatic impact on sales.
Car sales have been slowing down in recent months and the current trend is for planned rather than impulse buying.
Nevertheless, it is hoped that the UK might be "moving to a more normal sales market", the RMI's Sue Robinson told Adfero.
As of September, any new cars will carry number plates with the digits 55 after the current alphanumerical characters.
This distinguishes them from models purchased between March and August for which the digits were O5.
Future digits will be determined by a strict system: the first digit indicates March (0 to 4) or September (5 to 9) and the second indicates the year, which at present is 5.
